What is your mind doing?
One of the beginning experiences in meditation tends to be noticing a variety of thoughts that come tumbling through your mind. In meditation classes, I have learned this is called “Monkey Brain”. It is when thoughts just jump out all over the place in your head. Here you are, trying to meditate, to quiet your mind, and bring some peace to your life, even if just for a few minutes. And thoughts of what your friend told you that day, the lesson your teacher wrote on the board, and the worry of your school performance is on your mind. When these thoughts come, you can say to them (with your inside voice) “bye-bye” and let them go. When the next thought comes, say “bye-bye” and watch it disappear. You may spend your whole 10 minutes of meditation saying bye-bye to your thoughts. But eventually, with practice, you will have days during meditation where your mind actually quiets down and you think of nothing. This is pure bliss. Enjoy those moments, they may not come very often.
MILES OF TREES
A Work of Fiction, memoir style
She ties up the boat and we get off. Carly drives us to her house, where her husband lights the crab pot cooker in the yard. I am sure it goes by a different name but I don’t feel a need to ask. He fills the tall stainless steel pot with water from the spigot and places it on the flame. Carly drops the crabs in the water, one by one. I hear the sound of their claws scratching at the sides. The water isn’t hot yet and for this reason, I wonder where they think they are. I can’t watch it boil, so I walk around the yard and explore the gardens instead. Carly offers me a chilled glass of white wine and I eagerly accept. I am in a time portal: wine during the day, sex in the morning, pulling up crab pots in the afternoon, in Alaska. I forget about being a mom, I forget about my job and my home in Florida. I am fully here in this fantastical dream, wanting to stay soundly sleeping as long as it will last.

Edith Wilson’s memoirs were published 18 years later. She didn’t boast about her roles, spilling all of the details she held deep within her. She modestly talked about assisting the president with his duties and deciding which matters to bring to his attention. She was under doctor’s orders to keep her husband calm and to reduce his stress, to aid in his recovery.
For a year and a half, she made vital contributions during her time as Mrs. President.

GREATER THAN A TOURIST: GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA USA
December 2019
"While Florida mosquitos cannot compare in size to Alaskan mosquitos, they sting just the same. You will find them in abundance on the hottest and wettest of days. Typically, they will be sparse at outdoor establishments, surrounded by concrete. Wooded and grassy areas, gardens, and places near bodies of water, are the preferred residence of mosquitos. Depending on the type of person you are, mosquitos will either love you or be disinterested in you. Do they prefer a certain taste in blood, like vampires?"
